Why Use an Application?
An application can be used to separate the registration process from the shift selection process—unlocking several advantages for your volunteer program.
For volunteers:
A single registration gives ongoing access to scheduling, without the need to register each time. Since VolunteerLocal is a password-less platform, volunteers only need to provide their first name and email address to register.
For organizations:
Applications create a centralized volunteer database and enable advanced features such as applicant vetting (Status, Qualifications, Age) and enhanced reporting for long-term tracking of volunteer activity.

How to Add an Application to an Event/Program
When creating a new event/program—or editing an existing one—you’ll have the option to attach an application.
Once an application is selected, several additional features become available:
- Shift Preview – control what shifts are shown before application completion
- Unassigned Applicants – manage applicants who complete the application but do not select a shift (learn more)
- Required Fields – ensure completeness when volunteers are added administratively (e.g., imports)
- Status & Qualification Controls – manage volunteers who require vetting before they can sign up for shifts (learn more)
- Age Requirements
Volunteer Experience
When an application is tied to an Event / Program, volunteers are prompted to enter their first name and email address on the Application Gate Page—a page you can customize.
Volunteer behavior is handled as follows:
(a) If the volunteer is recognized (has previously applied) and has a Status that permits shift selection, they will proceed directly to the scheduling page.
(b) If the volunteer is not recognized (a new applicant), they will be directed to complete the application.
(c) Once a new volunteer completes the application, they will proceed to shift selection—provided no further administrative vetting is required.
